Volvo Really Takes the Plunge in Powerful Ad That Leaves the Car on Shore Grey London's 'The Swell'

September 29, 2014, 1:02 PM EDT
In its first global campaign for Volvo, Grey London strives for a "quietly epic" tone to position the Swedish nameplate more firmly in the premium auto space. Director Marcus Söderlund, working through Academy Films, delivers the goods with a visually compelling minute-long film called The Swell.
We open on a moonlit beach, where a Volvo XC60 sits in the sand, the hum of its radio melding with the sounds of the sea. "To feel, to really feel, is a rare thing these days," a voiceover says. We watch a woman paddle her surfboard through dark, choppy water as a huge wave rises with thunderous force … and the tagline, "Seek feeling," flashes on screen.
The Swell weaves its tale in moody hues, offering glimpses of the car as it focuses on the lonely surfer and approaching wave. (Söderlund also directed Grey London's fiery Vodafone ad about emergency responders.)

It's an unexpected approach, and the first campaign from global creative director Hollie Newton, who joined Grey last year from Wieden + Kennedy, where she contributed toaward-winning efforts for Lurpak butter. For Lurpak, she designed sensory experiences with cheeky, playful subtexts that reminded viewers not to take the ads too seriously.
The Swell shares this "sensory" sensibility, but ratchets up the intensity to a point where I imagine some viewers might be put off. Even so, Grey deserves credit for making a commercial that ripples with energy without drowning in car-ad clichés.

When Jerry Seinfeld turned his obsession with vintage cars into a Web series in 2012, Acura jumped on board. Years earlier, Lexus backed Lisa Kudrow’s award-winning Web series, “Web Therapy," and featured the show on L Studio, the car maker’s digital channel.
Today's car buying public is comprised of 80 million consumers who arguably care more about their smartphones than their vehicles. It’s where they spend their time, and it’s where they research and buy their cars.
Slowly but surely, the auto industry is realizing that if they want to be there with consumers at the point of purchase, they need to bond with them for the half-decade long sales cycle that leads to that moment.
So, how are automakers putting pedal to the metal to stay ahead of the curve? By reaching new demographics in their natural habitat: the mobile Web.
From Volkswagen's award-winning print and digital magazine to viral videos like Jean Claude Van-Damme’s epic split between two Volvo trucks, auto companies are shifting into gear and embracing the power of storytelling through digital content marketing.
In our latest e-book, “State of Automotive Content Marketing: Mapping the Road to Success in 2015,” we trace the trends and best-in-class examples. We also explore what automotive companies need to know about future of the industry in order to stay ahead in the race. Download the free e-book:

How Social and Email Helped Mazda's Limited-Edition Preorders Sell Out Crazy Fast Under the hood of the automaker's timely digital promotion
By Lauren Johnson

May 28, 2014, 12:45 PM EDT
Mazda bet big on social and email to tap into the classic roadster’s fervid fan base for its first all-digital pre-sale event to build buzz around a line of limited-edition MX-5 Miata cars.
In April, Mazda announced the sale of 100 25th anniversary Miata models at the New York International Auto Show. The brand quickly started churning out Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus posts to point consumers to a microsite where they could sign up to preorder the sporty car beginning on May 20. So, did these organic efforts pay off? Well, orders on the microsite filled up within 10 minutes, indicating that the digital work leading up to the promotion did indeed pan out for Mazda.
"We wanted to get the message out in a very concise way, so after we did the initial mass launch via the Auto Show announcement in New York, we then started talking it out in all of our social and digital channels,” said Russell Wager, vp of marketing at Mazda.
The Helloworld-powered site rolled out on May 1 with a countdown clock, asking car enthusiasts to type in their email addresses. Consumers could then sign up for an email reminder when the site went live, resulting in 1,600 email captures, Wager said.
A total of 250 sales leads were collected in the first 10 minutes of the promotion. Since only 100 cars were up for grabs, the additional 150 entries were gathered as back-ups in case some of the initial winners didn’t want to go through with buying the car.
The site generated 9,231 visits leading up to the promotion, and pulled in 6,519 clicks from May 20-26.
Mazda had intended to keep the microsite open for 10 days to turn out these 100 qualified sales leads, and credits some of the direct response-heavy social and digital efforts leading up to the promo as significant in triggering the the instant flood of responses.
The car brand has more than 1.5 million Facebook “likes,” a little more than 130,000 Twitter followers and roughly 820,000 Google Plus followers.
Between April 16 and May 20, Mazda posted a total of 11 Google Plus posts, 19 tweets and seven calls-to-action on Facebook. May 12 seemed to be the sweet spot in terms of engagement on Twitter and Facebook. Mazda’s tweet about the anniversary car was the brand's most retweeted tweet of the day, and a Facebook post the same day with almost 2,500 “likes” was shared more than 160 times.
“We have a huge enthusiast fan base first for Mazda, and second, specifically for the MX-5 Miata,” Wager said. “On any given weekend in the U.S., more people are racing in Mazdas than any other vehicle, and the majority of them are MX-5 Miatas.”
The Irvine, Calif.-based automaker now plans to follow up with the remaining 150 consumers who did not receive a car with information about upcoming product launches and offers as part of a push to ramp up CRM and loyalty efforts.
The microsite also now features a call-to-action to sign up for Mazda’s email newsletters.
"We’re actually using this as a little bit of a test case," Wager explained. "Maybe there will be some other limited-editions for other vehicles, maybe specific interior configurations [or] specific colors, but we’re definitely going to take this as a learning [tool] and we’re going to look to do this again in the future."

Infographic: The myths of social sharing

POSTED BY

Almost three quarters (72 per cent) of all sharing is still copy and paste, research from RadiumOne has found.
The research looks to expose the myths of social sharing, and discovered that vanity URLs increase average click volumes by 25 per cent.
It was also found, perhaps surprisingly, that millennials are least likely to engage with brand content of all age groups.

Fathers Will Love This Citroën Ad With a Dad Who Has Extremely Clingy Kids Where can he find some relief?

June 25, 2014, 9:27 AM EDT

It's a lot harder for a father to have fun, whatever he's doing, while his three young kids are clinging to his body at the same time.
This parenting-humor ad, aptly titled "Daddy," won a silver Lion in the Film category at Cannes last week for French automaker Citroën and Havas agency Les Gaulois.
Photographing birds, taking tango lessons and playing soccer are just a few of the hobbies that lose some of their charm for a man encumbered by his offspring. Because it's a car commercial, driving is the one thing he stills find enjoyable, with his brats somehow docile in the backseat—or at least physically off his person for a moment. (In reality, everyone knows those kids are still kicking and screaming for the whole ride.)
The ad—one of the most pro-father spots we've seen in a while—presents the same sight gag over and over again, but it stays funny because it's more or less true in spirit, a nice visual metaphor for the exhaustion that comes with hauling kids through their early years.
In fact, the character here must be the same guy as the dad from this Coca-Cola Life ad from Argentina (which won gold in Cannes) … just a few more years down the line.
