Push it: Kia shows Salt-N-Pepa still got it, and so has mum

While there may be an ongoing wrangle between ousted Innocean boss Mike Morrison and his former Kia paymasters, the agency has served up its latest add for the Koran car brand as part of its Fifa World Cup sponsorship on SBS and it's a cracker.

Eighties legends Salt-N-Pepa show how it's done in a Kia Sportage. The strapline is grow up, not old.

Mother and daughter push it real goo suburban style to pick up low fat milk at the behest of the old man, i.e. dad.

Salt-N-Pepa have still got it, and so has mum. And with the firm known for it's quality and long warranties, there will hopefully be no need to physically push it.

Kia, Toyota Push Out Their 2014 Super Bowl Commercials

 The Matrix and the Muppets
Laurence Fishburne ties out "Nessun dorma."
Following Volkswagen earlier today, and Audi and Hyundai yesterday, two more automakers released their 2014 Super Bowl spots Tuesday—with Toyota rolling out its 60-second ad with the Muppets and Terry Crews, and Kia unveiling a 90-second version of its in-game :60 featuring Laurence Fishburne reprising his role from The Matrix.
The Toyota spot, "Joyride," from Saatchi & Saatchi in Los Angeles, promotes the 2014 Highlander and Disney's upcoming film Muppets Most Wanted.
Kia's ad, titled "The Truth," by David&Goliath, pushes the K900 luxury sedan. It features Fishburne faux belting out Puccini's "Nessun dorma" aria, made famous of late by Paul Potts on Britain's Got Talent a few years back. It's also destined to be among the most fireworksy spots this year.

Super Bowl Ad Tracker: What to Expect in the 2014 Game

Welcome to Adweek's Super Bowl Ad Tracker, where we post everything we know about the advertising planned for the 2014 game. Priced at a whopping $4 million per 30 seconds, the game's ad slots were already sold out months in advance. As the details of these Super Bowl ads continue to be revealed, we'll drop them into the Ad Tracker below, so check back regularly for updates.
AUTOMOTIVE
Audi. Following up its popular "Vampire Party" and "Prom" spots from recent years, Audi will be back with a :60 slated to run right after the halftime show. The ad, created by Venables Bell & Partners, will feature the 2015 Audi A3 sedan.
Chevrolet. After GM sat out the game last year, reportedly due to the previous marketing chief's concern over high ad prices, the automaker announced it will return in 2014. No details yet, but sources say Chevrolet will be a focus.
Hyundai. Making its seventh Super Bowl ad appearance, the Korean automaker will have two 30-second spots in the 2014 game. In a change from its usual approach, Hyundai will actually be featuring celebrities this time around, with three as-yet-unnamed celebs slated to appear in one of the ads. For a sneak peek at the concepts, check out Adweek's exclusive preview.
Jaguar. The venerable British luxury automaker is working with Spark 44 and Mindshare to make the brand's Super Bowl debut in 2014 with a second-half spot promoting its new F-Type coupe. Check out this teaser clip, which revealed the involvement of famed actor Ben Kingsley. In addition, Gawker's sponsored content division, Studio@Gawker, has already launched a Good to Be Bad blog along with some countdown projections in major cities to help tease the spot, which makes light of the fact that British actors are often cast as Hollywood villains. "In the world of pop culture," the brand said in a statement, "villains disrupt the status quo and challenge the establishment, while living one step ahead of, and better than, the pack."
Kia. The frequent Super Bowl advertiser will return, this time with a 60-second parody of The Matrix starring Laurence Fishburne and promoting Kia's new rear-wheel flagship K900 model. According to Automotive News, the sedan will debut in early 2014 with a sticker price starting around $50,000. The :60 was created by longtime agency David&Goliath.
Volkswagen. Still trying to replicate its interstellar success with Little Vader in 2011's "The Force," Volkswagen will return to the Super Bowl in 2014 for a fifth consecutive year. With U.S. sales reportedly down 5 percent from last year, the pressure will be on to boost the brand in a big way. The automaker's last two Super Bowl spots from Deutsch L.A., "The Dog Strikes Back" and "Get Happy," were both relative disappointments in terms of public reception compared to "The Force," which has more than 58 million YouTube views to date.

Kia launches interactive game that allows people to return high-speed tennis serve live from a TV

In what is claimed as a world first, Kia and its communications partners - mobile solutions agency Mnet, media agency Initiative and creative agency Innocean Worldwide - have collaborated to create an interactive game that allows people to return a high-speed tennis serve live from their TV. Using their smart phone as a racquet, people can attempt to return a serve from Australia's very own Sam Groth, the world's fastest server (263kph).

Designed by Mnet to maximise viewer engagement for Kia's sponsorship of the Australian Open starting next week, the 'Game On' App will be supported by a campaign that consists of six ads delivering six different serves, an online practice court, digital outdoor and activations.

Says Tony Barlow, Chief Operating Officer of Kia: "Kia's partnership with the Australian Open Tennis provides us massive reach to a passionate audience to promote our great range of cars. The 'Game On' App will really enhance consumer enjoyment of the Tennis at home in a way that has never been done before. And of course, such an innovative and technologically advanced idea matches perfectly with Kia's core brand values."
Adds Travis Johnson, CEO of Mnet: "When you watch the tennis from home you can't imagine the power of the players' serves. We're giving everyone the chance to feel the pressure and react as the ball zips past. The App syncs with the on-screen serve using audio fingerprint triggers, and the accelerometer to determine the accuracy of the user's swing in a way similar to gaming consoles, but playable by anyone with an iPhone or Android smartphone."

Says Scott Lambert, creative director of Innocean: "This 'Game On' App gives the fans a fun way to interact with one of the worlds great sporting events, and in turn beautifully delivers on Kia's Global position of 'The power to surprise'."

The Kia 'Game On' App launches this week and ends with the Australian Open Men's Final on January 26th.

Kia Cerato becomes real-life confessional

Kia’s Cerato “uncomfortable moments” campaign has moved into an experiential phase, with members of the public being asked to make a real life confession and win a prize.

In a video on the Kia YouTube channel, the $3000 winner, identified as “Daniel”, confessed to his wife he did not like her cooking.

The confession follows two real-life uncomfortable moments staged for the campaign including a public display of nose-picking at an AFL game and man serenading strangers in a Sydney park.

They complement television ads created by ad agency Innocean with the tagline ‘never an uncomfortable moment’ that feature awkward exchanges in the car between a man and a woman who are interrupted on a date by a call from another woman he had double-booked, a marriage proposal met with a break-up and man who mistakes his female friend for being pregnant.

Hyundai, Kia Plan Ad Blitz During Super Bowl in U.S.

Based on article from ChosunIlbo January 2013

/Courtesy of Kia Motors

Hyundai and Kia plan to air seven ads on U.S. TV during this year's Super Bowl on Sunday, the largest single sporting event in the country in terms of prestige and TV ratings. Given that it costs over W100 million per second to broadcast commercials at this lucrative time, the two automakers said on Sunday they will spend more than W3.6 billion.

The ads will mostly feature Hyundai's Santa Fe and Kia's New Sorento R during the big game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Some 111.3 million viewers watched the final of the U.S. National Football League last year, setting a new record.
Hyundai and Kia accounted for a combined 8.7 percent share of the U.S. market in 2012, up from 4.8 percent in 2007 when they did not advertise during the Super Bowl. Kia's Optima commercial was named the best ad in the car category during last year's Super Bowl by USA Today and Facebook. The Optima saw its sales double in that month from a year earlier.

This year, Korean consumers can also participate in evaluating the Super Bowl ads. Previously, USA Today formed a panel in advance to pick the best of those aired during the game, but it has changed the format so that consumers around the world can vote in real time on its website.

Samsung Electronics will also promote its products during the Super Bowl. Rapper Psy, now a global star on the back of his viral hit "Gangnam Style," will appear in Paramount Farms' ad for Wonderful Pistachios.

Schreyer to oversee design in Hyundai, Kia

Based on article from KoreaTimes January 2013

Hyundai Motor Group announced Sunday that it has promoted Peter Schreyer to president of Hyundai Motor and its sister company Kia Motors to supervise the two automakers’ design sectors.

Previously, he shortly served as president of Kia Motors after being promoted to the position from vice president and chief design officer in a regular year-end reshuffle of the automotive group last year.
“The post has been newly created for him to supervise design in the two sister automakers and create a synergy effect,” an official from the group said. “He has been given a mission to come up with a long-term vision and strategies in design for the two brands and to enhance design competitiveness.”
Through the appointment, he will support the two sister automakers to develop their own design identities and pass on his expertise and experience to nurture talented car designers, the official said.
Hyundai Motor has boasted a fluidic sculpture design that is identified with the strong sidelines, the slanted, eagle-eye headlamps and the upside-down hexagonal grille applied to the majority of its vehicles such as the Sonata YF, the Grandeur HG, the Avante and the Tucson.
Meanwhile, based on the design philosophy of “the simplicity of the straight line,” Kia models have shared family looks with distinguishing grilles, applied to the K series _ the K3, K5, K7 and K9.
The improved design competitiveness has contributed to the success of the two automakers, which sold about 7.12 million vehicles globally last year, up 8 percent from the previous year.
“We believe the design plays an important role in further enhancing the quality of our products and boosting sales. We think Schreyer’s expertise in car design will contribute to strengthen our competitiveness and help the group become a leading global brand,” the official said.
Schreyer joined the group in 2006 as design director after working at Audi for more than 25 years and become the first non-Korean president of the country’s second largest conglomerate last year.

Another – “Man of Now” – features a man telling the camera: “I’m a barbecuing, meat-eating, sausage-sizzling, prawn-peeling salad lover.”

Shares of Hyundai, Kia plunge on fuel economy row

Shares of South Korea's largest carmaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors plunged on Monday after they were found to have exaggerated the fuel efficiency of their vehicles sold in North America.
In mid-day trading, Hyundai Motor fell 7.4 percent to 199,000 won (US$182), while Kia was down 7.1 percent at 56,200 won.
On Friday, the US Environmental Protection Agency said it had discovered inflated gasoline economy numbers on Hyundai and Kia models in an investigation sparked by consumer complaints.
The exaggerated numbers, which ran from one to six miles a gallon, had helped push some of the models into the much-vaunted 40 miles per gallon (MPG) club of gasoline-sipping vehicles.
The problem involved about 900,000 vehicles sold in the United States and 172,000 in Canada.
The two Korean companies blamed "procedural errors" and offered to reimburse car owners in both countries to cover the additional fuel costs associated with the MPG revision.

Hyundai, Kia to compensate for fib on fuel

Published in Sydney Morning Herald on Nov 4, 2012.

Reimbursing customers with fuel cards ... Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors.
The South Korean car makers Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors overstated the fuel economy on nearly a million late-model vehicles and will issue owners special debit cards to reimburse the extra money they are paying for fuel.
The error was announced on Friday by the US Environmental Protection Agency, which monitors the fuel economy tests by car makers.
The mileage on most vehicle labels will be reduced by 0.4 to 0.8 kilometres a litre, and the largest adjustment will be a difference difference of (2.5 kilometres a litre) for the Kia Soul's highway rating, US regulators said. Both car makers will place new labels reflecting the corrected mileage estimates on cars now at dealerships.
''Consumers rely on the window sticker to help make informed choices about the cars they buy,'' the assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, Gina McCarthy, said. ''EPA's investigation will help protect consumers and ensure a level playing field among auto makers.''
The two car makers, which are siblings and share automotive components and testing, said they had overstated fuel economy ratings for about 900,000 vehicles, or 35 per cent of the 2011-13 model year vehicles sold through Wednesday.
They blamed ''procedural errors'' at joint testing operations in South Korea for the problem.
The chief technology officer of Hyundai and Kia's shared research and development department, W.C. Yang, said: ''I sincerely apologise to all affected Hyundai and Kia customers, and I regret these errors occurred.''
The car makers will issue personalised debit cards to owners of the vehicles. The cards will reimburse the customers for the shortfall in the companies' mileage claims and what the EPA has found is the correct number for combined city and highway driving fuel economy rating.
The payment will be based on the fuel price in the region where owners live and on the distances they have driven. The cards also will include a 15 per cent bonus to make up for inconvenience to owners.
The EPA decided to audit the fuel economy claims made after receiving consumer complaints about Hyundai mileage estimates.
