Shares of Hyundai, Kia plunge on fuel economy row

Shares of South Korea's largest carmaker Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors plunged on Monday after they were found to have exaggerated the fuel efficiency of their vehicles sold in North America.
In mid-day trading, Hyundai Motor fell 7.4 percent to 199,000 won (US$182), while Kia was down 7.1 percent at 56,200 won.
On Friday, the US Environmental Protection Agency said it had discovered inflated gasoline economy numbers on Hyundai and Kia models in an investigation sparked by consumer complaints.
The exaggerated numbers, which ran from one to six miles a gallon, had helped push some of the models into the much-vaunted 40 miles per gallon (MPG) club of gasoline-sipping vehicles.
The problem involved about 900,000 vehicles sold in the United States and 172,000 in Canada.
The two Korean companies blamed "procedural errors" and offered to reimburse car owners in both countries to cover the additional fuel costs associated with the MPG revision.

FOOT ON THE PEDAL - WORLD MARKETS: iOS & ANDROID ADOPTION TRENDS
By Flurry (Blog) on 27 Aug 2012. Partial report quoted from TechCrunch.

iOS and Android Active Devices by Country, July 2012
The United States still leads in the number of active iOS and Android devices with 165 million, with China coming in just behind it with 128 million net active smart devices. From there, the numbers just sort of drop off — the UK finishes in third with 31 million active devices, while South Korea and Japan round out the top five with 28 and 22 million respectively.

More after the jump.

Fastest Growing Countries, by iOS and Android Devices

The rate of smartphone adoption device adoption has surpassed any consumer technology in history. China became the largest smartphone market with regard to devices shipped late last year, and now Flurry pegs China as (what a surprise!) the fastest growing market for iOS and Android devices. China’s smart device market grew just over 400% year-over-year, easily pulling ahead of BRIC compatriots Russia and Brazil, whose smartphone markets grew (a completely respectable) 189% and 220% respectively between July 2011 and July 2012.

Nissan Pathfinder

AT AUTO SHOWS, NISSAN LETS YOU EXPLORE THE 2013 PATHFINDER USING MICROSOFT KINECT

By Advertising Age on June 19, 2012

How do you show off a car that doesn't even exist? Nissan and Calgary, Canada agency Ciritcal Mass unveiled the 2013 Pathfinder at auto shows, letting people walk around the car, hop in and look at the interior using Microsoft Kinect technology.

The technology was deployed on a big screen, where the Kinect for Windows SDK technology tracked camera paths and recognized human gestures to let users really explore the car, including crouching down to check out the tires or opening the door.  The project is now being demonstrated at Cannes, and Nissan has plans to place the Pathfinder Experience into dealerships in the fall, and potentially into consumers' living rooms as "the future of the virtual showroom."
