LEXUS USES DRIVING DATA TO CREATE REAL-TIME PORTRAITS
http://www.fastcocreate.com/3020574/lexus-uses-driving-data-to-create-real-time-portraits

Most drivers are well accustomed to dashboard screens that display rear-view cameras, detailed radio information and Bluetooth connected phones. One driver in Belgium, however, has a wholly different in-dash digital display. Luxury car brand Lexus has given art collector Walter Vanhaerent a new IS 300h hybrid vehicle with a screen that creates auto-generative portraits of the driver.

Part marketing, part art experiment, the Art is Motion project uses specially developed software that measures Vanhaerent’s driving style--such as the balance between hybrid and fuel use, speed and accelerations styles--and converts that data into digital brush strokes based on the art of Spanish multi-media artist Sergio Abliac. For instance, if Vanhaerent accelerates quickly, the portrait will be rendered with strong, red brush strokes. A more chilled out drive in electric mode will results in cool, blue hues. The faster the car goes, the more abstract the illustration, where a slower drive will create greater detail.

Created by Belgian agency Happiness Brussels, the results of this car-as-artist experiment are broadcast on the Lexus website Artismotion.com. Past drives are recreated in short two-minute videos, giving site visitors a sense of how Vanhaerent maneuvered on a particular day, bringing this artful experience out of the car and to the masses. The site also includes interviews with Vanhaerent, who discusses his open-minded approach to art collection, and with artist Abliac, who explains how his work combines traditional art with digital tools.

While there’s only one car with such artistic prowess, one lucky bidder may one day end up in possession of the unique vehicle. The website currently has a bidding tool (that as of today stands at 44,800 euros), that, while is not, in fact, binding, does register bidders to any eventual future auction of the car.

Chinese auto marketing shifts from TVCs

BEIJING: Auto brands advertising in the Chinese market are reporting strong results from both product placement in movies and standalone branded micromovies, to the extent that the latter channel in particular could supplant TVCs.

More than 100 companies released brand micromovies on film and at online portals during the final quarter of 2012, according to a report from Bale Hudong (Beijing) Media Co. In addition, these companies had also arranged product placements in close to 500 micromovies.

Volkswagen has successfully utilised this route, bringing Hollywood star Keanu Reeves on board for a micromovie, Extreme Pursuit, as part of its China Sports Car Project. This featured Reeves alongside brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini.

"We are integrating marketing, film and social media in an engaging and fascinating way," Markus Nels, director of the Sports Car Project, told China Daily.

"The micromovie brings together intelligent product placement with Chinese and Hollywood stars to deepen Chinese consumers' understanding and appreciation of world-leading sports cars," he added.

Others saw the micromovie as offering better targeting than more traditional media. Gao Fang, vice-general manager of automaker FAW Toyota, indicated that it was a perfect vehicle to reach its intended audience of young and fashionable consumers.

"The combination of advertising and a film story can be easily accepted by young consumers," he noted.

Gao also saw this channel developing further, adding that "due to the unexpected market response, micromovies may replace TV commercials as the major marketing tactic for automakers in the near future".

His view was echoed by Huang Weichong, public relations manager with FAW Volkswagen, who said that a new micromovie for the marque's CC model had received 40m visits in two months. "We see a better result than with TV commercials," he added.

Chinese automakers are also looking to the big screen to make an impact globally, with Guangzhou Automobile Group's Trumpchi E-jet, a hybrid vehicle, featuring prominently in the latest film in the Transformers series in order to improve brand awareness internationally.

A recent online survey at Sina.com showed that almost 60% of respondents believe that seeing a vehicle in a film helped promote the brand's image, while 33% thought it made people more likely to purchase such a car.

Will Ferrell Shot 70 Ads For The Dodge Durango As Ron Burgundy

When Chrysler teased four ads with Ron Burgundy hawking the Dodge Durango last week, we thought that it would be one or two quick ads. We were wrong. Really wrong. They're doing 70 of them and, so far, they're brilliant.P
By some mahogany-wrapped miracle, Chrysler, Paramount and Will Ferrell got together and made 70 — sev-en-ty — different ads for the Durango. Not just TV ads. Some viral ads, Vines, skits and some stuff that'll never make it to TV. And a few for the Dodge brand as a whole.P
Chrysler showed a few this morning, but not all of them are online yet. ("They'll be added over time," a spokeswoman tells us.) We saw a few. They're all great. It's hard to pick a favorite, because there are so many. The one where he calls out each one of the Dodge models and says "put it in your grandma's name!" Amazing. References to the oil crisis in the Middle East and exclaims "We'll all be driving on moon gas!"? Ballsy.P
There's one where he uses Chrysler's UConnect nav system to go to "House of Thighs Burlesque" that's definitely not making it to TV.P
"Don't judge me, that is a classy chicken burlesque joint. House of Thighs just has great chicken. There's no getting around it. All I'm doing is supporting the economy. What are you doing?"P
And...P
"The rear seats fold all the way flat. You know what that means." *about 20-seconds of eye-fucking the camera*P
And...P
"When you're driving the new Dodge Durango, it isn't about the nappa leather seats or the seven-passenger seating. No, the real question is: Does it make your dingle jingle? Or does it make your dingle tingle? Does it handbag the grocers? Does it give you the ol' sticky beak? No, I'm asking you as a a man, does it make your pee-pee go boom?"P
So how did Chrysler pull this off? Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois — the guy who brought us the Eminem Super Bowl ad, but also the guy who brought us the Jennifer Lopez Fiat ads — says that this is only Chrysler's "contribution" to helping promote "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," so it sounds like Chrysler didn't have to spend a ton of marketing.P
More importantly, as Juan noted, the Durango is increasingly important to the Dodge brand and Chrysler as a whole. I've talked with Chrysler dealers in the past and many have acknowledged that customers come to showrooms with a Durango in mind, but leave with a Grand Cherokee.P
And Chrysler themselves know that they haven't been promoting the Durango like they should.I talked with both current and former Dodge CEOs about the SUV, and they said to expect a heavy play for the Durango because marketing had been nonexistent for the past few years. Well, here it is.

Land Rover Unveils Huge TV and Digital Push
Vehicle's Print Ads are Interactive

http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/land-rover-unveils-huge-tv-and-digital-push-152181

Land Rover is launching a considerable integrated campaign this week for its 2014 Range Rover Sport that entails inspiration-minded TV spots, an interactive game called "Race the Sun" and iAds, among other elements. All told, per the brand, the effort—dubbed "Driven To Another Level"—represents the automaker's biggest push ever.
The commercials feature very little copy, letting the viewers focus on breathtaking shots as a Range Rover Sport climbs Pikes Peak. A :30 will debut on broadcast and cable this week, while :60 and :90 versions will appear online. Sister agencies Y&R and Wunderman created the spots, while Mindshare handled the media buying.
"The innovation in the TV spot lies in its story line," said Kim McCullough, Land Rover's North America brand vp. "The spot re-creates the real-life feat that Range Rover Sportachieved when it set the world record for a production-standard [SUV] on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course earlier this summer."
In terms of TV, the Range Rover will be featured in branded content on weeks-old Fox Sports 1. The programs will entail two drivers competing in all-terrain contests while commandeering a Range Rover Sport.
The aforementioned Race the Sun game will go live in the next week or so. Accessible via mobile or desktop, the game virtually puts the viewer in the vehicle's driver's seat while experiencing five driving scenarios. Components involve testing different speeds, agility, off-road handling and abilities to check out the vehicle's interior and exterior features.
The Britain-based brand's iAd promos will run on mobile sites for major publishers such as The New York Times, while letting people who click through watch videos and customize a Range Rover Sport. And Web banners appearing on sites such as ESPN.com let viewers virtually steer the vehicle as it weaves through scenic landscapes. Also, Land Rover will sponsor infographics on Slate, appear in ads via The Washington Post's Topic.ly platform and be seen in online promos via Kelley Blue Book.
Land Rover is also investing mightily in print this November while zeroing in on the male demographic. Five-page spreads in Wired, Esquire and Car & Driver will feature image-recognition technology that lets readers wave their smartphone over the ad to get more information about the vehicle on their device.
Other print and banner ads will run in Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal and Robb Report. One example of the copy being planned: "All the Most Dominant Species Start Out in the Wilderness."
For McCullough & Co., it's all about interactivity.
"Today, consumers build their opinions of brands based on how they present themselves in digital, social and mobile, as well as the value they offer in these channels," McCullough said. "The most innovative aspect of the digital creative is its interactive nature and [it] enables consumers to actually experience multiple aspects of how the [Range Rover Sport] drives from their desktop, smartphone or tablet."
