Instagram Video Ads Are Coming Soon But the photo-sharing service continues to be very selective about its partners

Instagram is a bit of a control freak when it comes to advertising. Every sponsored image is preapproved and every brand thoroughly vetted. Now, video ads are quietly being tested, as the company takes a slow approach to building what could be Facebook’s next billion-dollar business.
The photo-sharing service has dabbled in sponsored videos with early advertising partners such as Levi’s, Ben and Jerry’s, Burberry, and Starwood, said Jim Squires, Instagram’s director of marketing. “Video will be a natural addition from an ad perspective,” he said.
Facebook and its rivals like Twitter and YouTube are competing heavily for video ad dollars. Indeed, Facebook proper is rolling out autoplay video slots—similar to how Instagram’s user-generated videos work by starting when people scroll over them—to sell in its News Feed.
However, Facebook is taking its time ramping up Instagram advertising, especially video, which Squires said is “still a ways out.
“Using photography and video together to reinforce a message over the course of a campaign, a lot of these things are part of the testing we’re working through,” he said.
So far, there have only been about 15 approved advertisers for sponsored images, explained Squires, adding that each brand goes through a “deliberate and methodical” process. The approach puts Instagram brands in a bit of an exclusive club, to which the ad world outside of the Instagram inner sanctum is waiting for access.
“Instagram is almost a magazine, and it wants its ads like in a magazine to be just as compelling as content,” said James Borow, CEO of digital marketing platform Shift.
The “bespoke” nature of the platform, as Squires calls it, means that wider adoption will be slow coming, even if marketers want in. One creative agency executive said that Instagram has had to turn potential customers away because of its selectivity.
Squires doesn’t deny being discerning and said that he has to tell brands to first embrace Instagram as a place to share their content in order to learn the aesthetic. He advises ad partners, like Taco Bell and Hollister, to produce images that capture a lifestyle, not just a product. “We work together from the beginning of a campaign—from the concept phase to production to final edit before a campaign goes live,” he said.
Instagram says it is still far off from offering self-serve tools—like ones most social media platforms give advertisers—to plan campaigns.
The growth strategy for now includes deals like the one it signed with Omnicom Media Group, which committed the agency’s brands to at least $40 million in ad spending.
Still, one ad industry insider said that the personal service can’t last forever and expects Instagram ultimately to open up the floodgates with video and self-serve. Squires said Instagram has a small but growing dedicated sales force and will continue to increase availability. “We are focused on that high-end brand side,” he said.

Mercedes Engines Roar in ‘Sound With Power’ Mashups

  |  November 14, 2013   |  0 Comments

There's no sound quite like a Mercedes-Benz engine. That's partially the premise behind an interactive audio-visual experience from integrated production company B-Reel and ad agency AMV BBDO.
The experience, Sound With Power, enables users to create audio mashups by combining the purr of the Mercedes E63 AMG engine with multiple sounds - ranging from performers like Tinie Tempah and Sub Focus to children's classic Stingray, as well as everyday sounds - which ultimately all play in sync.
The site launched in early October. Reps for B-Reel and AMV BBDO did not have usage stats. A Mercedes rep was not available for comment.
To create a mashup, users start with the sound of the engine and choose between a track from Tinie Tempah or Stingray to layer over it. Users are then given the option to add one of two additional sounds, which is layered on top of the mix and so on and so forth as the user decides between additional tracks featuring sounds like thunder or roller coasters.
The site features dozens of potential combinations, reps say.
"The idea was to recognize that all sorts of sounds have emotional power [including] music and other sounds such as babies," says Martin Loraine, copywriter at AMV BBDO. "[We ask users to] interact and choose the most emotionally powerful sounds...it's a really engaging, fun experience."
Further, the audience's ability to choose between older favorites like Dusty Springfield, as well as newer tunes, helps the experience resonate closer and result in "a nice mix of memories and choices," adds Alex Jenkins, creative director at B-Reel.
"It works best when you pull a range of different pieces of music together," Loraine says. "That's the thing about sounds and emotions...they're random [on the site] and don't go together, but they're emotional, like thunder mixed with orchestral strings mixed with a sitar. These are things that have no reason or right to go together, but create a really brilliant piece of music with an emotional response."
B-Reel says it created a "fully responsive and intuitive platform that enables seamless and simultaneous playback of multiple video clips across all desktop and mobile platforms."
The system adjusts the size and quality of the videos to individual hardware and browsers and synchronizes the video clips to the audio.
"It proved a significant technical challenge, but the results speak for themselves with a perfectly synced and fluid experience for the audience," B-Reel adds.

Buick’s “Get Off The Phone” Ad Has Comedy Duo Rhett & Link Urging People To Get #InTheMoment

Buick Get off the phone screen captureBuick’s latest advertising campaign is replacing automobile pitches with a public service announcement, encouraging everyone to pay more attention to what is going on around them. The campaign is being promoted on Buick’s “Get in the Moment” Tumblr blog, featuring the music video “Get Off the Phone” by comedy duo Rhett & Link.
While the comedy pair are filmed driving in a Buick Regal, along with the car in the background during some scenes, the video focuses on the song’s lyrics, a commentary on all the moments we miss in lieu of our obsession with smartphones.
Poking fun at everyone from teens staring at their phones, to moms ignoring their babies and foodies Instagramming their desserts, the song’s chorus includes the lyrics, “Get off the phone now, it’s going to be okay, there’s no need to be afraid. It doesn’t love you, it’s going to die one day, the government’s probably spying on you with it anyway.”
The video has  accumulated over 878,000 views since it was posted on Rhett & Link’s YouTubechannel December 3, with Unruly’s viral video chart showing it earning more than 26,000 shares. According to a report on Adweek, marketing agency DigitasLBi worked on the #InTheMoment campaign with Buick and helped broker a partnership between the automobile company and Rhett and Link.
Buick’s #InTheMoment Tumblr blog reads, “We all get lost in our smartphones. But imagine what you’ll find if you put the phone down for a minute. For a meal. For a conversation. For a road trip. Look up, live life, and join us in the moment.”

Sienna Miller hearts Ford Mustang

http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/sienna-miller-ford-mustang-2013-12-06

Seems the British actress has a soft spot for Ford’s all-new muscle car…

Important industry news: Ford has released a video of Sienna Miller stroking the new Mustang.
We're not entirely sure why. Perhaps the renowned British actress is an enormous fan of independent rear suspension. Maybe she's intrigued by the prospect of a turbocharged four-cylinder in America's most iconic pony car.
Then again, maybe the star of Layer Cake and Alfie is more a fan of big naturally aspirated V8s. These are the sort of questions art raises.
Whatever the subtext, the video - directed by Rankin, presumably the photographer rather than the Irish-English fast bowler - is a good chance to see more of the all-new tenth-gen Mustang, a car we'll see in Britain with the steering wheel on the correct side.
Not bad-looking, eh? Elegant, tall, blonde... oh, hang on...

Nissan to crowdsource next ad from Instagram peeps

Nissan has wholeheartedly embraced the 'fan collaboration' path and will make the next ad for its Juke model out of users' Instagram videos.

The car brand is asking users to 'point, shoot and tag' their Instagram videos to be included in the ad, which will be mixed by audio-visual artist Ego.

Nissan said the idea is designed to be synonymous with Juke's 'point and shoot' handling and driving performance.

People whose videos will be chosen to be included in the ad will be invited to attend a launch event on 21 November in Melbourne. The event will also be streamed live online.

It's exciting to be involved with a combination of cutting edge music talent and Australian fans,” said Nissan executive general manager marketing Peter Clissold. “And it's a great link to the point and shoot performance.”
The campaign was developed by Nissan's creative agency, Whybin TBWA Melbourne.

Will Ferrell Shot 70 Ads For The Dodge Durango As Ron Burgundy

When Chrysler teased four ads with Ron Burgundy hawking the Dodge Durango last week, we thought that it would be one or two quick ads. We were wrong. Really wrong. They're doing 70 of them and, so far, they're brilliant.P
By some mahogany-wrapped miracle, Chrysler, Paramount and Will Ferrell got together and made 70 — sev-en-ty — different ads for the Durango. Not just TV ads. Some viral ads, Vines, skits and some stuff that'll never make it to TV. And a few for the Dodge brand as a whole.P
Chrysler showed a few this morning, but not all of them are online yet. ("They'll be added over time," a spokeswoman tells us.) We saw a few. They're all great. It's hard to pick a favorite, because there are so many. The one where he calls out each one of the Dodge models and says "put it in your grandma's name!" Amazing. References to the oil crisis in the Middle East and exclaims "We'll all be driving on moon gas!"? Ballsy.P
There's one where he uses Chrysler's UConnect nav system to go to "House of Thighs Burlesque" that's definitely not making it to TV.P
"Don't judge me, that is a classy chicken burlesque joint. House of Thighs just has great chicken. There's no getting around it. All I'm doing is supporting the economy. What are you doing?"P
And...P
"The rear seats fold all the way flat. You know what that means." *about 20-seconds of eye-fucking the camera*P
And...P
"When you're driving the new Dodge Durango, it isn't about the nappa leather seats or the seven-passenger seating. No, the real question is: Does it make your dingle jingle? Or does it make your dingle tingle? Does it handbag the grocers? Does it give you the ol' sticky beak? No, I'm asking you as a a man, does it make your pee-pee go boom?"P
So how did Chrysler pull this off? Chief Marketing Officer Olivier Francois — the guy who brought us the Eminem Super Bowl ad, but also the guy who brought us the Jennifer Lopez Fiat ads — says that this is only Chrysler's "contribution" to helping promote "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," so it sounds like Chrysler didn't have to spend a ton of marketing.P
More importantly, as Juan noted, the Durango is increasingly important to the Dodge brand and Chrysler as a whole. I've talked with Chrysler dealers in the past and many have acknowledged that customers come to showrooms with a Durango in mind, but leave with a Grand Cherokee.P
And Chrysler themselves know that they haven't been promoting the Durango like they should.I talked with both current and former Dodge CEOs about the SUV, and they said to expect a heavy play for the Durango because marketing had been nonexistent for the past few years. Well, here it is.

SEE DANCING CHICKENS DEMONSTRATE STABILITY IN MERCEDES'S SURPRISE VIRAL HIT

When Mercedes wanted an appropriate visual to explain its "Magic Body Control" active suspension system, the brand turned to--what else?--chickens.

In this spot from agency Jung von Matt/Neckar Stuttgart, a bunch of chickens are seen to be dancing to Diana Ross's "Upside Down"--actually it's their bodies that dance, manipulated by the hands of what we can only presume are scientists, while their heads remain comically static, as chickens' heads do.

The unexpected visual device has struck a nerve--the spot is nearing a million views on YouTube.
Agency Art Director Lucas Osis and Copywriter Nico Baumann say that there's no trick to the spot--the funny effect is all down to poultry dynamics: "Basically, we just put a chicken in front of the camera. Then we got choreographers to move them according to the music and filmed it."
No CGI was involved, they say--"all the credits go to the chickens, which are just naturally able to keep their head steady"--but there was the matter of finding the right chickens. "(It wasn't) easy finding one, that was also willing to do it in front of a camera. So we literally had to contact every single animal trainer in Germany to find our star. Quite a headache, but we think it was worth it," they say.
The creatives say the brief was to create a commercial for Mercedes's stabilization system that adapts to street conditions. "We then remembered a video we’ve seen a while ago: a guy moving a chicken around while its head stood perfectly still: Exactly the same thing the Mercedes system is able to do. (A perfect analogy! But above all we wanted to create something that we would really enjoy to watch. So we tried to improve it somehow and thought: What’s better than seeing a chicken shaking? A chicken that is shaking to some funky disco music of course! And hopefully, people will agree with us."

An Inside Look at Nissan’s Vine and Instagram Video TV Commercial

Nissan Versa
By now, brands’ use of micro-video apps Vine and Instagram video is well-documented. Tapping into networks full of smartphone users hungry for visual content has given brands yet another way to reach and interact with their customers. Yet even as companies scramble to create mini-films to delight and entertain their audiences, who those clips reach is typically limited to mobile device users.
Despite the rise of new media, traditional advertising platforms maintain their vast reach and offer something else Vine and Instagram video don’t: frequency. Whereas, in advertising terms, reach refers to the number of people who see an ad, frequency denotes how many times each individual is exposed to it. For advertisers, both metrics are important, and achieving balance between them is a key goal. While Vine and Instagram are natural environments for such content, each video is likely to be seen only once by a brand’s followers.
In an effort to reach target consumers as well as the rest of America, Nissan USA is running a first-of-its-kind contest that will feature fans’ Vines and Instagram videos in an upcoming 30-second TV spot. Fans of the Nissan Versa Note can visitYourDoorToMore.com to grab printable elements that must be included in their Vine or Instagram video entries. The videos should focus on the entrants’ passions, include the Versa Note printable elements, and be tagged #VersaVid. Six people will win $1,000 Amazon.com gift cards, while three Grand Prize winners’ videos will also be chosen by the marketing team and incorporated into the TV commercial.
Nissan’s Director of Interactive and Social Media Marketing, Erich Marx, is one of the drivers of this campaign. We recently spoke with him to discuss the strategy and logistics behind the commercial.

Having Fun With It

Fun
The “Your Door To More” campaign is part of a media push to introduce the new generation of Nissan’s popular hatchback, the Versa, to the nation. Around the world, the same car is known as the Note, and Marx says the new name is a nod to the car’s global success. He also says having a young, active, and single target market opened the door for a fun approach.
“We were intrigued by this micro-video platform. Six seconds — what could you possibly do with six seconds that’s compelling?” Marx says. “But Vine is almost exclusively used by a younger, Millennial demographic. That’s an interesting alignment with our strategy.”
Originally, the marketing plan only included Vine, but with a week to go before the campaign launch, Instagram video came out. Realizing the potential to reach even more people, Marx and his team delayed the contest to make room for the new video tool. At press time, Instagram videos created for Nissan numbered 19, while Viners have created 30.
To Marx, giving Millennials an opportunity to cleverly express themselves in as little as six seconds is a fun challenge. Judging by some of the entries so far, users are taking the opportunity for TV air time seriously. The most creative videos feature stop motion, props and sound effects.

Length Matters

Stopwatch
In the raging social media debate surrounding Instagram video vs. Vine, there has been much speculation about which platform will win out in the end. According to Marx, this contest is a mini-experiment testing that. “I think a lot of people felt that Instagram was better because it gives you 15 seconds,” Marx says. “It’s a much bigger challenge than you think.”
Consider that most standard TV ads run in 15 or 30-second formats, sandwiched between full-length content. On mobile platforms where everything is served in bite-sized chunks, 15 seconds can feel like an eternity. Based on contest entries to date, it seems fans prefer the shorter Vine format as well.

Tapping Social to Drive Everything

Nissan Versa 2
Although the VersaVids will eventually make their way to TV, Marx and his team are soliciting entries through Nissan’s existing social networks. Using Twitter, Facebookand Google Plus, the Nissan social team is inviting over three million fans to participate. That, plus a bit of paid social advertising, is what Marx hopes will get lots of great entries.
For a campaign so centered around social, it’s no surprise that Marx’s measure of success is based on similar metrics. “We’re looking to drive tens of millions of Facebook impressions,” he says. “We’re looking to get 25,000 Twitter engagements, and we’re looking at the number of entries we get too.”
In this campaign, success is not limited to the second screen. For entrants and the Nissan social team alike, the TV commercial at the end of this contest is what’s most at stake. Slated to launch in September, Marx sees the contest as a build-up to the mainstream debut of the micro-video collage that will be one of the Versa Note’s first TV spots.
“The success of the television commercial that we’re able to weave together from the winning entries, we’re hoping that that’s something that can be a big part of the Versa Note broadcast TV launch,” Marx says.
For aspiring mini-videographers, the door to the #VersaVids contest remains open until August 5, 2013. What are you waiting for? Step on it!
